Reading My Way Around the World

Walking around Bundoran

I made 3 attempts to capture the sunset tonight and my silly husband kept photo bombing me so I've left him in!!! 😀

It's been ages since I've been here to write a post - but thankfully all the busyness has calmed down for now and we're getting a chance to step back a bit.

We've been down at my homeplace for the weekend and the car broke down.  This, only two days after we decided to change it.  It must have heard us and taken offence.  Anyway we've had to stay another night to get it repaired, hopefully tomorrow, or else borrow my mum's car to get us back.  But it was a lovely gift of extra time - not having to do that 100 mile return journey.  So instead we went for a stroll around Bundoran, ate ice-cream and watched a couple strolling on the beach.

Bundoran used to be the height of holiday chic when I was young.  It was packed with amusement arcades, swing boats, dance halls, bars and chip shops. It is just across the border, in the very south of Co. Donegal, only a few miles from where I grew up, and traditionally this fortnight was its heyday.  People poured out of the North to get away from the 12th July mayhem.
Now, it's cheaper to go abroad if you want to get out and besides there's very little trouble around the 12th any more.  The Orangemen get to Parade, there's a Bank Holiday and places like Bundoran have to work very hard to attract visitors. Tonight the place was very quiet - a few people like ourselves wandering around.   Perhaps next weekend will be busier.

But all that aside it still has a magnificent beach and has lots of surfers around and in Winter the wild Atlantic can be seen in all its glory.

Did you have a favourite childhood spot? Has it changed much?

  1. I think my only favorite childhood spot is where I currently live: my backyard. Had a lot of fun and peace of mind while playing in my backyard, as an adult, I get the same peace of mind spending time in my backyard.

  2. I think my favorite spot was the backyard followed up by the beach. Nowadays, it is our patio garden.
The beach area has changed, a lot. More shops opened and boarded up, less access to the beach.
    Always enjoy your blog.
    Happy Summer!

    1. Thank you Debbie :) Yes, lots of places are closed up here too, - it's a shame there's not much access to the beach.
A patio garden sounds lovely. Enjoy the sunshine.

  3. That's good, that you had some relaxation! I am sure I would love this place, beach... I like when it is not so crowded, on the beach, and still, there are some people. I love beaches in the winter, to tell you the truth. It;s such a nice post with your childhood memories... and so bad that the car broke and you have decided to change it! But nice that you could go to the beach! I like to walk through Dun Laoghaire close to Dublin or Tenby, in Wales :) But I would love to know Bundoran!

    1. DunLaoghaire is lovely - but I've never been to Tenby - the Welsh coast is fabulous though.
You must have wonderful beaches where you are in South America Denise.

  4. The couple photo is stunning.
We holidayed in Tenby in Wales up until the long hot Summer of '76 and never returned, my Mum wanted us to remember it at its most glorious. xxx

    1. Thanks Vix :) That was my favourite too :)
I'm just looking up Tenby - didn't know where it was - I've driven the motorway past there but that coast looks stunning.
Your Mum was cute to keep childhood memories in place. Were we hardier back then to want to go into the sea or are kids now just wiser?

  5. Lived in too many places ever to develop a kindness for anywhere. First as a war baby and then after the war my father moved around. Then when he decided to live on a boat we moved even more. These days I am very fond of North Carolina, but don't get back there much any more.

  6. These photos are lovely and I find it sweet that your husband photobombed. My husband kept photobombing me on Saturday with a piece of Lemon Verbena!
I have happy memories of my Nan's and Grandad's garden in the summer.x

Your Granda's garden looked amazing when you posted photos of it a few months back Kezzie - I'm sure there were fairies at the bottom of that garden.

  7. My favourite place is one of Canada's provincial parks, Killbear, where my husband & I first went to in 1970 !
I still go for 3 weeks at a time in September when the busiest season is over and the park is almost empty. This is where I am able to step back, regroup, and feel refreshed. I am thankful that the deer, bear, racoons and chipmunks let me share this piece of eden.
Love you photos of your corner of the world ;)
