I reckon that there was a stye of writing at the end of the 1800s when this was written that was very florid. It's an Anglo Irish song rather than a traditional sean-nos song. As for spare, I have to confess I also sing stir, but I found it interesting in this version to see the different wordings, from an area in Donegal that had a very Scottish influence.
