The start of Summer in the Celtic Calendar and last night all over this north west corner of Ireland people were leaving May flowers (Marsh marigolds) outside doors and windows to keep the fairies out - apparently they couldn't resist the beautiful smell of the flowers are were unable to pass. It's a lovely tradition and I remember well going to pick the flowers with my mother when we were children. In fact the May before she died a kindly neighbour left flowers outside her front door and windows.
I've borrowed this photo from the Donegal County Museum who keep records of old folkloric habits, many of which are being revived and revisited.
I hope summer shines on you and that we'll see some sun shining through soon.
